History and Chronicles. Sign me up. Gupta rule, while solidified by territorial expansion through war, began a period of peace and prosperity marked by advancements in science, technology, engineering, art, dialectics, literature, logic, mathematics, astronomy, religion, and philosophy. The Gupta Empire was believed to be a dynasty of the Vaishya caste, the third of the four Hindu castes representing merchants and farmers.
Founded by Sri Gupta c. Historians believe Sri Gupta and his son may have been Kushan vassals, or rulers who swore allegiance to the Kushan Empire. Chandragupta married princess Kumaradevi from the Kingdom of Magadha, which was one of the Mahajanapadas or great countries of ancient India during the 4th century CE. With a dowry and political alliance from the marriage, Chandragupta conquered or assimilated the kingdoms of Magadha, Prayaga, and Saketa.
Hindus believe the god Brahma offered his first sacrifice after creating the world at Prayag. Queen Kumaradevi and King Chandragupta I.
Samudragupta succeeded his father, Chandragupta I, in CE, and ruled for about 45 years. Just imagine, this Acharya or scholar came to Pataliputra all the way from Taxila to topple the Nanda dynasty in Pataliputra and did it!
More we know about Helena, Chandragupta and Chanakya, the more curious we become. Their lives were so extraordinary that even after 2, long years they amaze us. They still live among us! Chandragupta Maurya and Bhadrabahu History does not say if Helena was immune to poison or a Vishkanya. But Chandragupta, her husband, was. Daughter of Seleukos Nikator, the Commander-in-Chief of Alexander the Great and ruling Emperor of Persia and his Persian wife, Helena was believed to be around 15 or 16 when she married Chandragupta who was around 39 then.
We do not have an authentic historical record of the marriage but quasi-historical materials point to the fact that Chandragupta had fallen for Helena due to her beauty, and Helena too fell in love with him at the first very sight. It all happened on the bank of the Jhelum river in an area that now is in Pakistan. But how could a father marry his daughter to a man knowing full well that he was a Vishpurush?
Was Helena also a Vishkanya? History is mute here. But in her time, it is said Vishkanyas were there in Persia, Mesopotamia and Babylonia. Another strange fact is that we do not know what she looked like. Hence Chankya bringing this point is not possible. Thats possible. Thanks for liking the content.
I have already written on mughals. I would definetly like to write in future on Asian history and Indian history.
