Polynices was branded as a traitor and had lost his citizenship to Thebes; King Creon refused to bury him, letting his body rot. Antigone could be compared to the volunteers who buried the refugees because they knew it was right—she wanted to give her brother at least a simple burial. Antigone does not care, she desires to bury her brother, because she feels she is entitled to honor him. As another point, Antigone then buries Polynices and Creon sentences her to death, even after Tiresias warns him it will not end well.

Creon is doubtful. The sentry tells the story of how he and his colleagues removed the dirt from the body and then sat in wait. As they watched, a sudden whirlwind lifted a cloud of dust. When the dust settled, they saw Antigone standing over the body, screaming because she saw that it was bare.
She then poured handfuls of dirt on the body as the sentries came down and seized her. Many critics have asked why Antigone returns to the body, and why she feels the need to cover it with dirt again.
