What is the difference between prosthesis and prosthetic

There are covers that can go over your prosthesis and we can design and build you a special prosthesis designed for water activities including swimming, fishing. Reevaluation of the fit of your prosthesis is necessary if there has been a change in condition. This would include: reduction of swelling, changes in post surgical swelling, weight loss or gain, additional surgery or any other changes. Surgeons commonly involve us in the decision to amputate or revise a limb for prosthetic fitting.

This consultation may include: types of prostheses, limb length or other related issues. We accept most private insurances as well as Medicare and Medicaid.

We will help with the approval process and file the claim for you. Please contact our office with specific questions regarding your insurance. Post a review to our profile. Prosthetics and Orthotics. What is the difference between prosthetics and orthotics? What is a Prosthesis? What is a prosthetist?

Why would someone need an amputation? Why should I acquire a prosthetic limb? Do you make foot supports? Do I need a prescription to get a prosthesis? Will I be able to use my prosthesis the same way I used my natural limb? How long after amputation can I be fitted with a prosthesis? How soon will I be walking? What are the first steps to getting a prosthesis?

What if additional assistance is needed to wear the prosthesis? How does the weight of an artificial leg compare to a natural leg? Technological developments are also improving the function of limb prostheses. The range of prostheses includes surgically-implanted artificial body parts, such as replacement heart valves, bones or joints, and cochlear implants. If you have one of these, your medical team will advise you on maintaining your health and lifestyle following the surgery.

You might also have heard the word orthosis used. An orthosis supports and enhances a limb or body part, while a prosthesis replaces it. For example, an artificial leg is a prosthesis, while a splint to support the leg is an orthosis. Prosthetists are health professionals who specialise in prostheses. If you need one, they will work with your medical team to design and fit your prosthesis and help you use and care for it.

If you need an orthotic device to correct problems with posture and walking, you might also be assisted by an orthotist. Artificial limbs cost thousands of dollars, but there are many sources of funding.

The cost might be covered in full or in part by:. Public funding does not usually cover spare limbs or, for adults, limbs for specific sporting activities. You might choose to pay a contribution to get a higher quality model prosthesis than one that public funding would supply. Funding for breast prostheses is available under the External Breast Prostheses Reimbursement Program.

Prosthetics covered by private health insurance are listed on the Prostheses List. Talk to your health professional about costs and funding sources. Remember to ask about the costs of surgery, scans, tests and hospital stays.
